Dana Simpson cresceu em Gig Harbor, no estado de Washington.
Apesar de passar a maior parte do tempo a desenhar, lá conseguiu licenciar-se pelo Evergreen State College.
Entre 1998 e 2008, escreveu a banda desenhada online Ozy and Millie e, em 2009, depois de ganhar o concurso Comic Strip Superstar, patrocinado pela Amazon, assinou um contrato com a Andrews McMeel Syndication para desenvolver a série Bia e o Unicórnio, um bestseller do New York Times desde o primeiro volume.
