Born in Vila Boa do Bispo (Marco de Canaveses) on April 18, 1952, he attended the seminaries of the Portuguese Missionary Society (now the Missionary Society of the Good News). He was ordained a priest on December 3, 1980. In Rome, at the Pontifical Urbaniana University, he studied Biblical Theology, obtaining his Canonical Licentiate and Doctorate degrees, the latter on February 6, 1989. In Jerusalem, he studied... António Ferreira Gomes Cultural Institute, and at multiple cultural and ecclesial institutions. He was Rector of the Boa Nova Seminary, Superior General of the Missionary Society of Boa Nova, and a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. He received episcopal ordination on September 23, 2007. He was Auxiliary Bishop of Braga and has been Bishop of Lamego since January 29, 2012.
