Sendo o irmão mais novo de seis filhos, Craig Smith foi criado em Queenstown. Filho de mãe solteira, que trabalhou muito para garantir que não faltava nada aos seus filhos, mas, como diz o autor, "Era preciso sentido de humor para crescer naquela casa". Craig deu bom uso a esse sentido de humor ao compor a canção The Wonky Donkey que foi covencedora do prémio da APRA para Canção Infantil do Ano em 2008. Craig trabalha como músico e artista itinerante - desde que tenha sua guitarra, ele pode trabalhar em qualquer lugar!
