Tem 46 anos, é inglês e é advogado de direitos humanitários. Passou mais de vinte anos nos Estados Unidos a representar prisioneiros no Corredor da Morte. Em 1999, criou uma instituição com sede em Londres intitulada Reprieve, desenvolvida para defender os direitos humanos. Nos últimos anos, representa muitos clientes detidos na Baía de Guantánamo, em Cuba.
