Outrora, foi professor convidado dos colégios All Souls e Trinity, em Oxford. Tem diversos livros publicados, incluindo Juan e Eva Perón (Outubro de 1999). O ensino e a escrita sobre ditadores e ditaduras, juntamente com o seu amor a Cuba, deram origem a um crescente interesse por Fidel Castro.
