Licenciado em Medicina, especialista de saúde pública, doutorado em saúde comunitário. Médico de saúde pública em vários centros de saúde – Alentejo, Porto, Lisboa e Cascais. Subdiretor geral da saúde no mandato da ministra Maria de Belém. Professor universitário em várias universidades. Presidente do conselho distrital da Grande Lisboa da Ordem dos Médicos. Dirigente da Associação Académica de Moçambique e da Associação de Estudantes da Faculdade de Medicina de Lisboa. Militante do PCP (1974-2000), e nessa qualidade responsável da comissão concelhia de Sousel, membro da comissão distrital de Portalegre e da Comissão Nacional de Saúde. Fundador e dirigente da Associação Renovação Comunista.
