Carlos de Almada Contreiras nasceu em Aljustrel, em 1941, tendo feito grande parte do seu percurso de vida na Marinha de Guerra Portuguesa. Participou ativamente no 25 de Abril de 1974 e na redação do Programa do Movimento das Forças Armadas. Indicou a canção "Grândola Vila Morena" como senha da operação militar dessa madrugada. Entre outros cargos, foi Conselheiro de Estado, Conselheiro da Revolução e diretor do S.D.C.I.. É Capitão-de-Mar-e-Guerra, na situação de Reforma. Dirige a coleção "Memórias de Guerra e Revolução" editando obras que procuram estudar e clarificar a memória histórica da Revolução de Abril de 1974. Grã-Cruz da Ordem da Liberdade.
