Carl Einstein (1885-1940), escritor, historiador de arte, crítico e ativista político, foi autor de uma obra inovadora e fundamental para a renovação do pensamento contemporâneo. Figura influente no panorama artístico da década de 1920, interessou-se pelos emergentes movimentos modernistas, especialmente o cubismo, e pelas artes africanas. O seu ensaio Escultura Negra viria a influenciar decisivamente as vanguardas artísticas do século XX.
