Calema

Calema is a musical duo composed of twin brothers António and Fradique Mendes Ferreira, born on September 19, 1992, in São Tomé, São Tomé and Príncipe. From a very young age, António and Fradique demonstrated an interest in music: they grew up in a home where singing and the sound of traditional drums intertwined with modern rhythms, and it was in Angola, where the family moved when they were about seven years old, that they took their first steps on school stages and at family parties.

In 2011, already living in Portugal, Calema participated in the program The Voice Portugal, where they impressed the public with the natural harmony of their voices and captivating stage presence. Although they didn't win the competition, they gained immediate visibility, which allowed them to sign a contract with Sony Music Portugal and record their first official single. The mix of African influences – kizomba, semba and funaná – with contemporary pop and fast-paced R&B became their distinctive trademark.

Their debut album, "A Nossa Vez" (2015), solidified their success in Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking diaspora, featuring songs like "A Nossa Vez" and "Teia" that became hits on radio and streaming platforms. The album stood out for its sophisticated production and moving lyrics, which address love, overcoming challenges, and cultural identity. Tours followed in countries such as Switzerland, France, and Brazil, where the duo captivated audiences with the energy of their shows and their connection with the public.

In 2018, Calema released the single "Te Amo," which crossed European borders, topping the Brazilian charts and earning a gold medal in streaming certifications. The song served as a preview for their second album, "Flexível" (2019), where they deepened their fusion of rhythms and explored collaborations with renowned producers in Lisbon and São Paulo. Standout tracks on this album include "Ritual" and "Nosso Segredo," showcasing their sonic maturity and ability to innovate while maintaining melodic elegance.

Beyond their recording career, António and Fradique are also recognized for their involvement in social causes, notably supporting music literacy projects in disadvantaged communities in São Tomé and Angola. With a growing presence on international stages and a legion of loyal fans, Calema has established itself as one of the most solid and promising projects in Lusophone music, continuing to reinvent itself and bring the richness of African culture to diverse audiences around the world.
