Bruscamente falecido com a idade de 39 anos, Boris Vian (1920-1959) teve tempo para ser, em simultâneo, engenheiro, inventor, músico e crítico de jazz, poeta, romancista, cenarista, autor dramático, tradutor, cronista, declamador, intérprete das suas próprias canções e ator. Entre as suas obras mais conhecidas podem referir-se, para além de O Outono em Pequim, os romances A Espuma dos Dias (1946) e O Arranca Corações (1953).
