Bill Watterson nasceu em Washington DC em julho de 1958 tendo mudado para Changrin Falls, em Ohio, aos seis anos de idade. Formou-se em Ciências Políticas no Kenyon College em 1980 tendo começado a trabalhar de seguida no Cincinnati Post como cartoonista . As tiras Calvin e Hobbes só foram publicadas pela primeira vez em novembro de 1985. Bill Watterson aposentou-se em novembro de 1995, dedicando-se desde então à pintura.
