Com vasta experiência no mundo empresarial, foi CEO da Medtronic, sendo actualmente director na ExxonMobil e na Goldman Sachs. Foi nomeado um dos «25 Empresários Mais Importantes dos Últimos 25 Anos» pela PBS, sendo considerado o «Executivo do Ano» em 2001 e 2002 pela Academy of Management. Escreve para meios de comunicação influentes, entre os quais o Wall Street Journal, a Business Week, a Fortune e a Harvard Business Review.
