Bernardo Guimarães nasceu em 1825, em Minas Gerais. De 1847 a 1852, cursou a Faculdade de Direito de São Paulo. Exerceu diferentes atividades ao longo da vida: foi juiz, professor, jornalista, mas gostava mesmo de literatura. Escreveu vários livros de poesia e ficção, mas foram os romances "A escrava Isaura" (1875) e "O seminarista" (1872) que reservaram um lugar de destaque a Bernardo Guimarães como um dos mais importantes prosadores do Romantismo brasileiro. Faleceu em 1884.
