Barbara Mutch nasceu e cresceu na África do Sul, neta de imigrantes irlandeses que se fixaram na região de Karoo no início do século XX. Frequentou a escola em Durban e Port Elizabeth, tendo-se licenciado na Rhodes University. Tal como a sua protagonista Ada, é uma talentosa pianista e seguidora atenta da política e da história do continente africano.
