Nasceu em Lisboa, no dia 14 de julho de 1923, filho dos escritores Fernanda de Castro e António Ferro. Formou-se em Ciências Histórico-Filosóficas pela Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa, tendo cerca de 35 obras publicadas. Recebeu diversos prémios pela sua atividade literária e colaborou em diversas publicações. Escreveu para o Diário de Notícias, o Diário Popular, o Jornal de Letras e a revista Ler, entre outras. Fez traduções de autores franceses, entre os quais Georges Duhamel, André Maurois, Jean Cocteau e Albert Camus.
Brilhante conferencista e orador, dirigiu o Serviço de Bibliotecas Itinerantes da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, fundou o IADE, onde lecionou História da Arte. Pertenceu ao Grupo da Filosofia Portuguesa e integrou também a International Society for Education through Art, órgão consultivo da UNESCO, de que foi delegado em Portugal até 1981.
Faleceu no dia 21 de março de 1993, Dia Mundial da Poesia.
