Professor emérito da Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto. Académico correspondente da ANBA, Academia Nacional de Belas Artes. Nasceu em Aveiro (1950). Licenciou-se em Pintura (1971) pela Escola Superior de Belas Artes do Porto.
Obteve DEA, Diplome d’Études Approfondies (1980) e o doutoramento (1990) pelo Centre du XXéme Siècle da Université de Sophia Antipolis, em Nice, França, investigação orientada pelo Professor Michel Sanouillet (presidente da Associação Internacional para o Estudo de Dada e do Surrealismo). A investigação de doutoramento teve como assunto «Les relations artistiques entre le Portugal et la France (1910-1930). Réception de la Modernité chez Almada». Enquanto artista, realiza exposições, e enquanto investigador realiza estudos em torno de questões associados à investigação artística, as relações entre o pensar e o fazer (Fazer falar a pintura, pensar o fazer da pintura), as metodologias específicas de investigação em pintura, o ensino artístico em contexto de escola de arte, e a teoria e a história da pintura.
