António Manuel Hespanha (1945-2019), historiador e jurista, iniciou a renovação da história institucional e política da monarquia portuguesa e seus territórios ultramarinos da época moderna e do século XIX. Autor de dezenas de livros e centenas de artigos, traduzidos em várias línguas, com um enorme impacto internacional, a sua obra é de leitura fundamental para quem deseja estudar a monarquia portuguesa da época moderna, a monarquia constitucional, mas também o papel que o direito e os juristas tiveram na construção dos sistemas políticos da Europa do Sul.
