Um dos mais emblemáticos pensadores do século XIX português, Antero de Quental nasceu de uma família fidalga na ilha de S. Miguel, nos Açores. Em Coimbra estudou Direito e aí se tornou destacada figura de uma notável geração de intelectuais, tendo ombreado, entre outros, com Eça de Queirós, Ramalho Ortigão e Oliveira Martins. Autor de uma obra muito diversificada, constituiu-se marco incontornável na literatura portuguesa.
