Annie Besant

Annie Besant was born in 1847 in London, England and died in 1933 in Madras, India. She was a revolutionary woman in her time: theosophist, socialist militant, freemason, activist and defender of women's rights, one of the greatest orators of her time and author of several literary works on Theosophy. In 1889, he received an invitation to write a review of the book Secret Doctrine, by Helena Blavatsky. After reading the work, Annie did an interview with the author, and then became a member of the Theosophical Society. In 1903 she moved to India and in 1908 was elected international president of the Theosophical Society, and remained in office until her death. In 1912, Annie Besant, Marie Russak and James Ingall Wedgwood founded the Order of the Temple of the Rosicrucian, but had to suspend their activities because of the numerous problems that originated in England during the First World War. In India, he founded the Indian Nationalist League. There she devoted herself to the Theosophical Society and to the progress and freedom of India, being the first woman elected President of the National Congress of India.
