Filha da romancista Jeanne Ray, Patchett nasceu em Los Angeles, na Califórnia, nos Estados Unidos da América, mas mudou-se para Nashville, no Tennessee, quando tinha seis anos, onde ainda continua a viver, na companhia do marido, Karl, e de um cão, Sparky. Em 2011, quando a cidade onde vive deixou de ter o que ela considerava ser uma boa livraria, Ann Patchett meteu mãos à obra e abriu a Parnassus Books.
Patchett é autora de oito romances, dos quais se destacam Bel Canto, Comunidade e A Casa Holandesa. As suas obras estão traduzidas para mais de trinta idiomas. Em 2012, a revista Time incluiu a escritora na lista das cem pessoas mais in¿uentes do mundo.
