Angela Merkel
Angela Merkel, Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 2005 to 2021, was the first woman to reach the highest office the country has to offer. Born in Hamburg in 1954, she grew up in East Germany, where she studied Physics and earned a doctorate in Natural Sciences. In 1990, she was elected to the German Parliament. From 1991 to 1994, she was Minister for Women and Youth; from 1994 to 1998, Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety; and from 2000 to 2018, President of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany. In 2021, she announced the end of her active political career.
