Álvaro Guerra (1936-2002) nasceu em Vila Franca de Xira em 1936. Escritor, jornalista e diplomata é um dos grandes nomes da literatura portuguesa contemporânea. Foi embaixador na Jugoslávia, Zaire, Índia, Suécia e no Conselho da Europa, em Estrasburgo. Trabalhou na renovação do jornal República, dirigido por Raul Rêgo e Vítor Direito, acompanhando-os depois no jornal A Luta. Em finais de 1974 foi director de informação da RTP. Da sua obra vasta destacam-se: Os Mastins, 1967; Café República, 1982; Café Central, 1984; Café 25 de Abril, 1984; Crimes Imperfeitos, 1990; Razões do Coração, 1991; Crónicas Jugoslavas, 1996, Grande Prémio de Crónica da Associação Portuguesa de Escritores, em 1997; e Nos Jardins das Paixões Extintas, 2002.
