Álvaro Carvalho

Álvaro Carvalho was born in August 1948, in Mata de Lobos, municipality of Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo. He completed his secondary education at the Guarda High School. He worked for the Collective Food Products Court while studying Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Lisbon, graduating in 1975.

He began his medical career at the Lisbon Civil Hospitals, specializing in Internal Medicine. He directed the Medicine Service at the Cascais District Hospital and was president of the Teaching Committee at the Santo António dos Capuchos/Desterro Hospital. In 1992, he was appointed clinical director of the Garcia de Orta Hospital, a position he held for eight years, simultaneously heading the Medical Department and the Medicine Service. In 1994, he reached the pinnacle of his hospital career.

From 2002 to 2008 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Garcia de Orta Hospital. He was a visiting professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon and clinical director of the Social Services of Caixa Geral de Depósitos. He is President of the Álvaro Carvalho Foundation.

Contributor to the regional newspaper Echoes of MarofaAuthor of the books River of Memories, with editions in Portuguese and Spanish, On the Margins of Medicine, At Eight Minus a Quarter and Anatomy of a Kidnapping.
