Alexander Kielland

Alexander Kielland (1849 – 1906), nasceu no seio de uma família norueguesa abastada, mas interessou-se desde sempre pelas classes trabalhadoras, tendo mantido, através da sua escrita, um papel de crítico social e defensor dos desfavorecidos.
Máximo expoente do naturalismo europeu, a história colocou-o entre os «Quatro Grandes» da literatura norueguesa, ao lado de Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson e Jonas Lie. Após a estreia literária com uma recolha de contos e novelas (Novelletter, 1879), obtém grande sucesso com os romances Garman & Worse (1880), Skipper Worse (1882), Gift (1883) e Fortuna (1884). A sua obra constituiu influência decisiva para as gerações futuras.
