Recebeu o New York Times Notable Book, o SCIBA Award (atribuído pela associação de livreiros independentes da Califórnia do Sul), o Los Angeles Times Pick of the Year, o Alex Award e diversas nomeações para «Melhor Livro do Ano». Vive atualmente em Los Angeles onde ensina escrita criativa na University of Southern California. A sua obra está traduzida em dezasseis línguas.
