With the publication of Jonathan Franzen’s eagerly awaited Freedom drawing closer, praise has been flooding in from the media both here and across the Atlantic. Peter Aspden in the Financial Times calls him ‘a Tolstoy for our time’, claiming that this publication has ‘revived the world of books’, while Terence Blacker in the Independent praises his dignity; ‘How we need the quiet, old-fashioned wisdom of Jonathan Franzen right now’. The Evening Standard last week ran with the auspicious headline ‘Has America Produced the Novel of the Century?’ and it seems Esquire certainly thinks so, describing Freedom as ‘The Great American Novel’.
